Don’t give up hope of resolving MIA cases

It all began on February 20, 1967 when a plane went down. Now more than 40 years later a piece of bone is discovered during an excavation in Vietnam. On January 8th 2010 Nellis Air Force pilot remains are found and identified.

"This is the four inch bone fragment that was found," pilot's daughter, Christine Stonebraker says. While it would take more than two years for DNA results to be confirmed, Christine Stonebraker now knows what happened to her father, Nellis based Air Force pilot and Thunderbird announcer, Russell Goodman.

"Don't give up hope, don't give up hope, there's always a chance you'll see your loved one's remains as well," Christine says.

Goodman was on a bombing mission in North Vietnam when his plane, an F-4 Phantom was hit with a surface to air missile. Goodman was presumed dead but no one knew for sure.

At our American Legion as well as most others we have a special table for POW/MIAs. It is represented by a place setting which is never used. From the Legion guide for the symbolism represented by the table:

The Tablecloth is white, symbolic of the purity of their intentions to respond to their Country’s call to arms.

The table is being set for One, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner, alone against his or her oppressors.

The Yellow Ribbon on the Vase represents the yellow ribbons worn on the lapels of thousands who demand, with unyielding determination, a proper account of our comrades who are not among us.

The Single Rose in the vase signifies the blood they may have shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of our beloved United States of America. This rose reminds us of the family and friends of our missing comrades who keep faith, while awaiting their return.

A Slice of Lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of their bitter fate, those captured and missing in a foreign land.

The Salt being sprinkled on the plate is to remind us of the countless tears of those who have never come home and of the tears of their families and friends, whose grief knows no end.

The Bible serves to remind us of the comfort of faith offered to those who face seemingly insurmountable challenges, and it also reminds us of our country being founded on the principle of One Nation Under God.

The Glass is inverted; they cannot toast with us this day/night.

The Candle is reminiscent of the light of hope, which lives in our hearts to illuminate their way home, away from their captors, to the open arms of a grateful nation.

The American Flag reminds us that many may never return and have paid the supreme sacrifice to insure our freedom.

The Chair is empty, our Comrades are missing.

May Update

The Legion Riders met as scheduled on Saturday 19 May after the flag planting.

The Flag planting was done in a couple hours by our members "Seaweed", "Pokey" AKA "Sniper", "Colonel", "Scooter", "Yexs" and our one of our newest members "Wingman" assisted by Legion members, Jack, Mike, Karen, Betty, Tom, Steve, Devin, E Man and others. We completed all the flags before it rained - about 14oohrs we had our meeting. Our new member nominees were voted in and will hopefully get to see us soon. (we had three new member applications this month.

At the Legion meeting new Memberships were approved and recorded by the Secretary/Tresurer. The Longaberger Raffle tickets are pretty much stopped - we discussed what do do with raffle and will get a decision from the president soon to determine when winner will be pulled. As noted previously - He had the road Captain put the basket back up for another drawing to raise additional funds for the ALR and to share part of the proceeds with Al Galiki for medical expenses. (Al approached the legion for a charity for his deceased Grandaughter’s medical care bills and thus the provision for a portion of the funds). We will be conducting the drawing for the basket once all tickets are sold or sooner based on that discussion.

Also discussed was the need for courtesy cards for Legion Riders from other post - we now have three - I will discuss with Adjutant to get cards available.

The next month's meeting is scheduled for 10 June at 1400hrs.

Everyone should have your Membership cards –lost or missing your card for 2007, contact Terri Krecker. Terri will issue new members cards shortly once applications are processed.

We also left some additional ALR flyers at the club for placement at other legions - they have tear away sheets for contacting us via the ALR webpage. (Update - we posted flyers at Hellertown, Allentown Sumner St, Fullerton, Hoqendauqua, Northampton, Bath, Nazareth, Easton Brown and Lynch and Lester-pfeffer.)

Reminder; Membership standing rules have been approved requiring active participation to remain a member in good standing. The Secretary Treasurer is recording participation by members.

Our Rider's Bikes

Well - I got a little grief from our riders when I posted just the picture of my Bike in the Blog - so I endeavored to collect as many existing pictures of models represented by our American Legion Rider members and put them on the page... I could not find some colors...but I think I have many represented now.

I am sure the riders will submit photos with them at events with their bikes so we can "complete the record"

A reminder to Post 588 - The placement of Flags on Veteran's Graves will be done at 1100 Hrs (11 AM) on Saturday 19 May - Rain or shine. We have about 1700 flags to place on 8 South Side Eastob cemetaries and we need all the help we can get... come on out and give us a hand.
