October Update - uh oh

Oh Boy, I missed the meeting for October because I decided to go on another ride on that great weather weekend.

About a week prior to our scheduled Legion Rider meeting, I attempted to solicit interest in an outside organization's ride and was successful in getting several other delinquents to join me.

Unfortunately the president of our post Legion Riders had a different view of the importance of the meeting as scheduled.

I have subsequently sent a note resigning from the Legion Riders and do so for the sake of the organization as well as my freedom to ride where and when I like.

I will not be maintaining this page any longer for the Riders and will eventually delete it once the riders come up with an alternative. In the meantime there will be no posts from me on it.

Happy riding to all of you. Colonel

Post 588 ALR update

We have been busy riding lately. We have been putting some serious miles on the bikes in all kinds of weather.

We had our monthly meeting on Friday 6 June with final details completed on the Poker run. We have had donations from many sources and we will write up a note thanking all our generous sponsors.

Colonel, Pokey, King, Kye, Jazzman and his lovely wife went to Rolling Thunder Memorial Day weekend. The event went very well and we managed to get our pictures in the Washington Post local edition and webpage on the 26th of May.

On 7 June we went to Post 16 Slatington 2nd Annual Poker Run. We ran into that ALR chapter's President, Denise, VP Bob and enjoyed the stops (all Bars) and the VFW in Whitehall. Colonel actually ended up winning something in the Chinese Auction and we enjoyed the camaraderie. Colonel, Pokey, Seaweed and Diane, King and Kye and $ went on the ride.

On 8 June we went on a run up to the Wilkes-Barre VA with Combat Veteran's Motorcycle Association PA Chapter 22-1 Run for VETs. We thank Karen H. and her Real Estate firm for a spectacular donation of socks and other stuff for the Vets. We were very well received and the donations made a real difference to the recipients who were profuse with their appreciation. Colonel, Pokey, King, Seaweed were the rider’s representing for our Post. CVMA did a great job organizing the event and getting access to the facility. A very worthwhile trip.

Of course I want to remind everyone of our posts events

March update and events calendar

March Update and Event Calendar

Rice-Ebner Post 588 American Legion riders met on 9 March 2008 at the post. Business was conducted to include discussions on our upcoming Poker Run scheduled for June. Hokendaqua ALR Post 739 had a representative that opened discussion on food, manning booths and other topics necessary for our upcoming event.

Our Legion Riders also managed the Post's meat wheel event which was a great success for the post. Many thanks to Seaweed and Pokey for their work for the event.

Hopefully riding weather is coming soon and we will get out and ride a little. Some of our members have been riding as they are snow birding in Florida... saw the pictures from Kye of her and King down at Daytona Beach. Kye had the nerve to come to the meeting looking all tanned, etc from her time in Florida...I'm of course highly envious.

Random thoughts

As explained at the legion the other day to the members - the Buffalo Theory Here's how it went: "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.
Thanks to King for that joke...

And thanks to those who worked on the Meat wheel drawing yesterday... it was a great success - we raised dollars for the Childrens Christmas Party at the Legion which should be a great event. The Xmas party is on the 15th of December and last day for signing up kids/grandkids is 10 Dec 2007. (ages 2-10 years)

Also we have a volunteer for establishing the Legion website - hope to announce and link to that site soon - have a good day !!!

October Update

Its been a fun month - we have done a lot of riding in rain and cold and in nice weather as well....

We had our meeting on 21 October with all officers present and we were visited by Jim Wentworth the State Regional something or other for the American Legion Riders... He straightened us out with our meeting protocol and installed all of our officers. We were also honored to have Tom Boher (pronounced Bonner) and his lovely wife with us as well as and Dave Ziegler at our meting to discuss next June's Poker Run. After the drudgery of the meeting we went for a fun run down to the Alba Winery where we had a tour and tasted a little vino.... yum yum

Also this last month Pokey, King, Kye and Colonel went on a winery tour in the Finger Lakes region of NY. We stopped in and visited the Geneva American Legion on the shores of Lake Seneca and enjoyed the trip with the Lost Riders from the Wind Gap American Legion Post.

Our Next Meeting is scheduled for 18 November 2007 at 1400hrs at the post. (change due to Vet's day three day holiday for us Fed employees)

ALR Post 588 Update

Note Change for meeting date and time

The American Legion Riders met at the post on 12 August at 1400hrs.

No new members. Event Calendar was discussed as well as concept and planning for a 2008 Poker Run to be sponsored by the post and another ALR chapter. Tentative planning date for 08 Poker run is set for 21 June 2008. We will put together a proposal and discuss with the other chapter to determine if they are willing to set event up.

Pokey and the Colonel attended the ALR state rally at Mountaintop American Legion Post 781 over the weekend of 17-19 August. This event was restricted to American Legion Riders and was attended by members of several dozen ALR chapters from throughout the state. The event was a good time and we met and discussed ideas and issues with several groups that have been established in AL community. June Update updated

It has been a fast month with several events. Notes from the June meetings and events attended by our post members - plus I will have some updated pictures of member bikes on here shortly.

The June meeting was held on the 10th at Rice-Ebner. Our VP held the meeting as our president is still out in Indiaouisianna (supposedly working but rumor has it that he is touring Legion Posts as a self appointed QA specialist) Pokey, Seaweed, King, Kye, Colonel were in attendance and dispensed with our buinsess pretty quickly.

Over the last month - as noted here - we participated in the Slatington Chapter ALR Poker run which was very nice and enjoyed... excellent event - we learned how to do such an event and the possibility of doing our own next year was discussed.

On Friday the 8th of June, Seaweed, Colonel, Pokey, That CD Guy and "submariner" (I don't have a nick name for our new member Jim yet - he is a submariner that served sometime after the Hunley was commissioned - lots of possibilities lol - Jim comment with your nickname!) rode up to Hoqendaqua Post for the Lehigh County Flag retirement - it was a good ride and nice event. We mentioned our thoughts of a poker run and shared planning with the Post ALR president and recieved a positive reaction. (He reads this site it seems - so let me say hello and thanks for having us up on Friday) We have some work to do to plan dates.

Finally I added the event for a ride up to Orange County Choppers - the date is tentative and may change - I just put in on as a placeholder.

26 June 2007 - Bar Bingo night at the Legion

28 June - American Legion and Home association meetings at the club.

3 Jul-8 Jul - Colonel and Pokey bike run to Western PA

8 July 07 - Nicholas Juliano Freedom Run - Ride and rally to promote POW/MIA awareness and Veteran's rights. Leaving from Warren County Vo-Tech on Rt 57 West 0900-1130Register Ending at Warren County War memorial in Belvidere, NJ. Hosted by Rolling Thunder NJ Chapter III http://www.rollingthunder.nj.org/

8 July 2007 - 1400hrs Post 588 ALR meeting at Rice-Ebner If we participate in Freedom Run - meeting may be postpones - e-mail will go out in advance.

? 15 July 2007 - Ride to Orange County Choppers (tentative) Leave from Rice-Ebner at about 0900hrs and ride to Rock Tavern, NY to visit OCC store and shops. (Seaweed is coordinator)

12 August 2007 - Colonel's birthday ride - exactly 3 years ago on this date the Colonel recieved notice of his mobilization to go to Iraq. To celebrate this event the Colonel will ride to someplace seedy and not politically correct (comment with suggestions) Drop a comment or send an E-Mail with your ideas which may or may not be published in their entirety on the site nudge nudge) We will leave after ALR meeting

12 August 2007 - 1400hrs Post 588 ALR meeting at Rice-Ebner

17-19 August 2007 - ALR state rally - Mountaintop American Legion Post 781. Event is restricted to American Legion Riders and is $35 per person and $60 per couple if payment is made before 1 July. Flyer is in the club. Busses to/from area hotels - dinner and booze. Currently Pokey and Colonel are planning to go - we have a room reserved at the Holiday Inn Express Fri and Sat night.

?? September 2007 - Veteran's Home party support - with Legion Auxiliary ride to Spring City Veteran's home to conduct annual Fall festival for Veteran's home residents. This is a service to Veteran’s event for the Club (20 Points)

Reminders

Just a friendly reminder we will be meeting Friday, 8 June at 5pm (1700hrs) to ride to the Hokendauqua Post for the flag retirement ceremony.

Also we have a regular meeting scheduled for 10 June at 2 pm (1400hrs). We will meet at the post and ride to the Riverside Bar and Grill on Rt 611 north and conduct our meeting there.

Also - we finally raffled the Longaberger basket off last night at Bar Bingo - we managed to sell about 240 tickets total for the basket and the winner was Karen Hanker. We may want to consider a 50-50 or other event during Bar bingo night in the future.

Finally - news at the club - Ann resigned as Bar Manager - this has put in motion a search for a new manager - interviews for manager will be held on Tues - Weds 24-25 Jun from 7-9 PM - see sign up sheet for interview schedule. Ann spent 5 years as our manager and we wish to thank her for her support of our activities.

Poker Run with Slatington ALR

Thought I'd take a minute to post some pictures of the run on Saturday with the Slatington Post American Legion Riders. They put on a great and enjoyable event which ended at the Whitehall VFW. The picture above is Pokey at the VFW post which has an F14 display which overlooks the Valley.
The ride started at the Slatington American legion - wound throuh Lehighton, to Fogelsville, stopped at some interesting places enroute and ended at the VFW. The reception from the Slatington ALR group was great...
