Don’t give up hope of resolving MIA cases

It all began on February 20, 1967 when a plane went down. Now more than 40 years later a piece of bone is discovered during an excavation in Vietnam. On January 8th 2010 Nellis Air Force pilot remains are found and identified.

"This is the four inch bone fragment that was found," pilot's daughter, Christine Stonebraker says. While it would take more than two years for DNA results to be confirmed, Christine Stonebraker now knows what happened to her father, Nellis based Air Force pilot and Thunderbird announcer, Russell Goodman.

"Don't give up hope, don't give up hope, there's always a chance you'll see your loved one's remains as well," Christine says.

Goodman was on a bombing mission in North Vietnam when his plane, an F-4 Phantom was hit with a surface to air missile. Goodman was presumed dead but no one knew for sure.

At our American Legion as well as most others we have a special table for POW/MIAs. It is represented by a place setting which is never used. From the Legion guide for the symbolism represented by the table:

The Tablecloth is white, symbolic of the purity of their intentions to respond to their Country’s call to arms.

The table is being set for One, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner, alone against his or her oppressors.

The Yellow Ribbon on the Vase represents the yellow ribbons worn on the lapels of thousands who demand, with unyielding determination, a proper account of our comrades who are not among us.

The Single Rose in the vase signifies the blood they may have shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of our beloved United States of America. This rose reminds us of the family and friends of our missing comrades who keep faith, while awaiting their return.

A Slice of Lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of their bitter fate, those captured and missing in a foreign land.

The Salt being sprinkled on the plate is to remind us of the countless tears of those who have never come home and of the tears of their families and friends, whose grief knows no end.

The Bible serves to remind us of the comfort of faith offered to those who face seemingly insurmountable challenges, and it also reminds us of our country being founded on the principle of One Nation Under God.

The Glass is inverted; they cannot toast with us this day/night.

The Candle is reminiscent of the light of hope, which lives in our hearts to illuminate their way home, away from their captors, to the open arms of a grateful nation.

The American Flag reminds us that many may never return and have paid the supreme sacrifice to insure our freedom.

The Chair is empty, our Comrades are missing.

October Update - uh oh

Oh Boy, I missed the meeting for October because I decided to go on another ride on that great weather weekend.

About a week prior to our scheduled Legion Rider meeting, I attempted to solicit interest in an outside organization's ride and was successful in getting several other delinquents to join me.

Unfortunately the president of our post Legion Riders had a different view of the importance of the meeting as scheduled.

I have subsequently sent a note resigning from the Legion Riders and do so for the sake of the organization as well as my freedom to ride where and when I like.

I will not be maintaining this page any longer for the Riders and will eventually delete it once the riders come up with an alternative. In the meantime there will be no posts from me on it.

Happy riding to all of you. Colonel

Post 588 ALR update

We have been busy riding lately. We have been putting some serious miles on the bikes in all kinds of weather.

We had our monthly meeting on Friday 6 June with final details completed on the Poker run. We have had donations from many sources and we will write up a note thanking all our generous sponsors.

Colonel, Pokey, King, Kye, Jazzman and his lovely wife went to Rolling Thunder Memorial Day weekend. The event went very well and we managed to get our pictures in the Washington Post local edition and webpage on the 26th of May.

On 7 June we went to Post 16 Slatington 2nd Annual Poker Run. We ran into that ALR chapter's President, Denise, VP Bob and enjoyed the stops (all Bars) and the VFW in Whitehall. Colonel actually ended up winning something in the Chinese Auction and we enjoyed the camaraderie. Colonel, Pokey, Seaweed and Diane, King and Kye and $ went on the ride.

On 8 June we went on a run up to the Wilkes-Barre VA with Combat Veteran's Motorcycle Association PA Chapter 22-1 Run for VETs. We thank Karen H. and her Real Estate firm for a spectacular donation of socks and other stuff for the Vets. We were very well received and the donations made a real difference to the recipients who were profuse with their appreciation. Colonel, Pokey, King, Seaweed were the rider’s representing for our Post. CVMA did a great job organizing the event and getting access to the facility. A very worthwhile trip.

April early update and Event Calendar

Rice-Ebner Post 588 American Legion riders are getting their machines up and running in anticipation of the ridiing season. We sent Halfacre down to Lansdale to the regional meeting… I guess we have some new cards and a new permission slip…. You can tell the lawyers got involved as the dogone thing is two pages of jargon….oh well…

Tha CD Guy confirmed the leather Depot is participating in the Poker run – so we are set for first three stops. Thinking real hard… we decided that it makes more sense to start at Rice-Ebner – get over to Leather Depot then Shochs then Walnutport then Hokendaqua post. This means a route recon – a deliberate one this time with measurements of distances, turns, etc… First nice weekend day we’ll try to get a couple folks together for the task.

Our Legion Riders also managed the Post's meat wheel event which was a great success for the post. Many thanks to Seaweed and Pokey for their work for the event. The next Meat wheel event is 27 April at 3PM

Hopefully riding weather is coming soon and we will get out and ride a little. Some of our members have been riding as they are snow birding in Florida... saw the pictures from Kye of her and King down at Daytona Beach. Kye had the nerve to come to the meeting looking all tanned, etc from her time in Florida...I'm of course highly envious.

January update

The Legion Riders met as scheduled on Sunday 13 January. Some of our members did ride in and I owe them their shot and beer.

Unfortunately Colonel and Pokey could not make the meeting as Kim AKA "BB", their daughter was called up for deployment on Friday 11th Jan with a departure date of Tuesday 15th for Ft Dix for training and subsequent assignment with her unit in Iraq. As a result it was a somewhat hectic weekend for us getting her packed and organizaed for the departure on such short notice. We will keep you posted on her status on this or the Restiredreservist site - see link as events unfold for her.

We had a good turnout for the meeting I'm told and Seaweed can comment to this article with the major items of business conducted.

There was some discussion about going to Rolling Thunder this year. I can do some of the legwork and put together a ride for that and will get started with that effort... I'm thinking (pending general agreement) agenda as follows
Saturday 24 May 0900hrs - depart Post 588 and ride via Rt 100, Rt 1, Balt-Wash parkway to NE Washington. Hotel Saturday night - depart Sunday (Early) for the Pentagon Parking lot where event starts - option A is to ride back Sunday (long day) or option B is to ride back Monday (Memorial Day). Lodging would be tentatively planned for Super 8 College Park, 9150 BALTIMORE AVE College Park, MD 20740-1348 - ~$75 / night - DC Suburbs Northeast Area with good parking, etc...

Last Sunday - a couple Legion riders had a work party at the club - oh boy such fun - we cleaned the kitchen including the vents, defrosted all the freezers, worked on the post smoke eaters.

Other events

10 Feb 2008 - Next Legion Rider Meeting - 1400hrs at the club

9 March 2008 - March Legion Rider meeting - also Meat wheel will be this afternoon after the meeting (~1500hrs) a couple Legion Riders will be helping the club with this event.

13 April 2008 - Veteran's Home party - We will schedule and plan an early spring ride to Spring City Veteran's home to conduct a event for Veteran's home residents. Details to be worked with the Auxillary - This is a service to Veteran’s event for the Club (20 Points)

11 May 2008 - Legion Riders Post 588 election of officers

17 May 2008 - Flag planting on Veteran's Graves with Legion Post. Anticipated date for Flags to be placed on South Side Easton Veteran's graves by Post 588. approximately 1750 flags are placed in 8 south side cemetaries. Story of Christmas at The Legion Riders House

'Twas the night before Christmas, and not until Spring
Would a motor be running, not even a Wing.
The bikes are all sleeping; they're covered and warm,
Batteries are tended, nylon covers their form.
My Bro's were all nestled down snug in their beds,
While visions of new chrome danced in their heads.
And I in my dew-rag, bike jacket and boots,
Out shoveling snow, and dreaming of scoots.
Then from the horizon there came such a clatter,
My shovel I dropped, what could be the matter?
Away up the hill, I slogged through the snow,
Looked up at the sky; where'd all that noise go?
Then a throb from the heavens, like straight pipes so hearty,
Gave Summer's good thoughts, a loud bikers' party.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Ultra Classic, Red trailer in rear!
With a little old rider, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than a V-Rod his Ultra came on,
And he whistled, and shouted, and sang out this song;
"Now, Fatboy! Now, Dyna! On Sportster and Softail!
Now gold wing! Now Injun! On Yamaha! and Triumph!
To the top of the porch; to the top of the wall!
Now RIDE away! RIDE away! RIDE away all!"
As small bikes that from the semis do fly,
When they meet with the air blast, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top that Drifter it flew,
With a trailer of goodies, and ole' St. Nick too!
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the Legion roof,
The rumble and thunder of pipes that gave proof.
I ran in the Post, boots thumping around,
And in came St. Nick all bearded and round,
Dressed all in black leather, from dew-rag to boot,
His chaps were all tarnished with road grime and soot;
A T-bag of goodies he'd flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His shades -- how they twinkled! his dew-rag how scary!
With chains intertwined, through skulls that were cherry!
His droll little mouth had done many a row,
So the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
The smoke had a strange smell; it gave him relief.
He had a broad face and a large fat beer belly,
That shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was tattooed and plump, a right jolly old rider,
So I offered a cold brew, thought what could be righter?
A wink of his eye as he downed that cold beer,
Gave me to know I had nothing to fear.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to my ride,
And fixed it with Chrome, Horsepower and Pride.
And giving the peace sign with bikers' good cheer,
Strode off to his Ultra rumbling near.
He sprang on the saddle, his gloves on the bars,
A wheelie he threw; then off towards the stars.
I heard him exclaim, as my chest swelled with pride

"Merry CHRISTMAS TO All, AND TO ALL A GOOD RIDE!"

Random thoughts

As explained at the legion the other day to the members - the Buffalo Theory Here's how it went: "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.
Thanks to King for that joke...

And thanks to those who worked on the Meat wheel drawing yesterday... it was a great success - we raised dollars for the Childrens Christmas Party at the Legion which should be a great event. The Xmas party is on the 15th of December and last day for signing up kids/grandkids is 10 Dec 2007. (ages 2-10 years)

Also we have a volunteer for establishing the Legion website - hope to announce and link to that site soon - have a good day !!!

June Update updated

It has been a fast month with several events. Notes from the June meetings and events attended by our post members - plus I will have some updated pictures of member bikes on here shortly.

The June meeting was held on the 10th at Rice-Ebner. Our VP held the meeting as our president is still out in Indiaouisianna (supposedly working but rumor has it that he is touring Legion Posts as a self appointed QA specialist) Pokey, Seaweed, King, Kye, Colonel were in attendance and dispensed with our buinsess pretty quickly.

Over the last month - as noted here - we participated in the Slatington Chapter ALR Poker run which was very nice and enjoyed... excellent event - we learned how to do such an event and the possibility of doing our own next year was discussed.

On Friday the 8th of June, Seaweed, Colonel, Pokey, That CD Guy and "submariner" (I don't have a nick name for our new member Jim yet - he is a submariner that served sometime after the Hunley was commissioned - lots of possibilities lol - Jim comment with your nickname!) rode up to Hoqendaqua Post for the Lehigh County Flag retirement - it was a good ride and nice event. We mentioned our thoughts of a poker run and shared planning with the Post ALR president and recieved a positive reaction. (He reads this site it seems - so let me say hello and thanks for having us up on Friday) We have some work to do to plan dates.

Finally I added the event for a ride up to Orange County Choppers - the date is tentative and may change - I just put in on as a placeholder.

26 June 2007 - Bar Bingo night at the Legion

28 June - American Legion and Home association meetings at the club.

3 Jul-8 Jul - Colonel and Pokey bike run to Western PA

8 July 07 - Nicholas Juliano Freedom Run - Ride and rally to promote POW/MIA awareness and Veteran's rights. Leaving from Warren County Vo-Tech on Rt 57 West 0900-1130Register Ending at Warren County War memorial in Belvidere, NJ. Hosted by Rolling Thunder NJ Chapter III http://www.rollingthunder.nj.org/

8 July 2007 - 1400hrs Post 588 ALR meeting at Rice-Ebner If we participate in Freedom Run - meeting may be postpones - e-mail will go out in advance.

? 15 July 2007 - Ride to Orange County Choppers (tentative) Leave from Rice-Ebner at about 0900hrs and ride to Rock Tavern, NY to visit OCC store and shops. (Seaweed is coordinator)

12 August 2007 - Colonel's birthday ride - exactly 3 years ago on this date the Colonel recieved notice of his mobilization to go to Iraq. Our Rider's Bikes

Well - I got a little grief from our riders when I posted just the picture of my Bike in the Blog - so I endeavored to collect as many existing pictures of models represented by our American Legion Rider members and put them on the page... I could not find some colors...but I think I have many represented now.

I am sure the riders will submit photos with them at events with their bikes so we can "complete the record"

A reminder to Post 588 - The placement of Flags on Veteran's Graves will be done at 1100 Hrs (11 AM) on Saturday 19 May - Rain or shine. We have about 1700 flags to place on 8 South Side Eastob cemetaries and we need all the help we can get... come on out and give us a hand.

Rice-Ebner Post 588 American Legion Riders update

The Legion Riders met as scheduled on Sunday the 15th of April. No significant business was presented. Membership including late members was recorded by the Secretary/Tresurer.

Our president was a winner of one of the Longaberger Raffle tickets—He had the road Captain put the basket back up for another drawing to raise additional funds for the ALR and to share part of the proceeds with Al Galiski for medical expenses. (Al approached the legion for a charity for his deceased Grandaughter’s medical care bills and thus the provision for a portion of the funds. We will be conducting the drawing for the basket once all tickets are sold. You can help sell the tickets when your in the club or elsewhere – the basket is on top of the Bar.

The next month's meeting is scheduled for 19 May, after all the flags are put out on the cemeteries. (20 activity points). Meet at the club at 11 am. Also if you know of anyone who need community service hours, this event can help them toward those needed hours (we will provide a certificate for those who need it). All are welcomed and encouraged to participate.

Everyone should have your Membership cards –lost or missing your card for 2007, contact Terri Krecker.

We also left some additional ALR flyers at the club for placement at other legions - they have tear away sheets for contacting us via the ALR webpage. With the warmer weather we should get out and post some flyers at other legions. (Update - we posted flyers at Hellertown, Allentown Sumner St, Fullerton, Hoqendauqua, Northampton, Bath, Nazareth, Easton Brown and Lynch and Lester-pfeffer.)

Reminder; Membership standing rules have been drafted requiring active participation to remain a member in good standing. The Secretary Treasurer is recording participation by members.
